Born in deep south, moved to Northwest
- multi-talented: pianist, singer, songwriter, arranger, saxophonist, bandleader
- developed Gospel R&B --> influenced by Clyde McPhatter & Jackie Wilson --> characterized Gospel R&B as being "more adult" than rock and roll (did not relate well to teenagers due to lack of "fun" aspect)
- achieved major cross-over success c "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" (contributed to integration of audiences)
