-entered presidency in a time of economic crisis
-made it worse by favoring coinage
-Ensured money would be hard to come by
-Crisis lasted through all of his term which ensured he wouldn't be re-elected
-followed by William Henry Harrison who died a month into office but was the first Whig president. when he died
John Tyler: took over who was a democrat and supported state's rights though the Whigs opposed that. vetoed many Whig bills and alienated Whig leadership. Whole cabinet resigned in protest (all whigs). Known as the president without a party
