The War of 1812 June 18, 1812–Feb. 18, 1815 (18 juin 1812 – 18 févr. 1815)

Description:

-Madison sought a solution to America's trade problems and congress responded with Macon's Bill No. 2 that reopened trade with France and England
-Madison promised that if either country renounced its interference with American trade, he would cut off trade with the other, France accepted and trade with England was cut off
-France still harassed American ships and so did England (even more know b/c they were angry)
-War Hawks: saw war as an opportunity to grab new territories to the west and southwest (southern and westerners). Also wanted to gain Canada from the British (lead by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun)
-Madison asked Congress to declare war in 1812
-Natives sided with the British in an effort to stop American expansion into Indiana and Illinois
-American forces were ill-prepared
-British captured D.C in 1814 and set the White House on fire
-Federalists opposed the war b/c it disrupted trade
-Hartford Convention: Federalists met to consider a massive overhaul of the Constitution or if that didn't work then secession
-When the war ended, the federalists were seen as traitors and the party dissolved
-The war spurred American manufacturing which will lead to the industrial revolution
-American system was established which composed of various programs such as the rechartering of the National Bank, and the expansion of the National Road
