-accepted out of a sense of obligation
-only veto if bill is deemed unconstitutional
-created a cabinet even though the constitution doesn't specifically give the president the duty or power to
-Hamilton: secretary of the treasury, strong central gov't. and weak state gov't., proposed a National Bank, loose constructionist, federalist (strong federal gov't.)
-Jefferson: secretary of state, strong state gov't. and weak federal gov't., strict constructionist, democratic-republican
-Whiskey rebellion: rebels against Whiskey tax set to control the national debt, Washington dispatched militia to put it down; significant b/c it showed the federal gov't. powers to Americans
-Low point: Jay's treaty, executive privilege (withhold information from the public to protect national security)
-High point: Pinckney's Treaty
-ended with his famous farewell address
-encouraged neutrality, and warned Americans against sectional divisions and political party conflict
