washington naval conference (12 nov 1921 – 6 févr. 1922)
Description:
the washington naval conference was a conference between powerful naval nations which aimed to fix the problem of overpowered naval nations and tensions in East Asia. the countries involved were United States, Japan, China, France, Britain, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Portugal. they came up with three treaties- the four power treaty, five power treaty, and the nine power treaty.
four power treaty was signed by the US, Great Britain, France and Japan and the main result was it replaced the Anglo-Japanese treaty of 1902.
five power treaty was signed by the US, Britain, Japan, France and Italy and it discarded almost 1,900,000 tons of warships to the Great Powers.
nine power treaty was signed by the US, Belgium, Britain, Japan, Netherlands, China, France, Italy and Portugal and it gave all nations the right to do business with equal terms.
this was important as the League made some monumental successes regarding disarmament. at this point in time, the League was doing fundamentally everything it had promised to do.
