-reversed or withheld reforms - avoid US accusations of socialism/intervention (by 1954 CIA was installing US-friendly dictatorships across Central + Latin America)-corruption continued
-violence used to brutally crush opponents --> seen as an imperialist oppressor
-Castro brought legal challenge against Bastista's seizure of power --> "enemy of state", so went into hiding to plan armed revolution
