-Tried to weaken Qin nobility by abolishing primogeniture (property now had to be shared between brothers, not given to the oldest son)
-Thought that a ruler should trust his own judgement and do anything to compel obedience from subjects
-Willing to sacrifice individual freedom to protect prosperity of the state
-Killed in 338 BCE after becoming entangled in a bitter intrigue at court
