"The Massachusetts Body of Liberties, the first legal code established by European colonists in the New England, legalizes slavery.Massachusetts thus became the first state to officially legalize slavery, while Mississippi became the last state to officially abolish it (with belated ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment) in 1995."
