First Aliyah (1 janv. 1882 – 1 janv. 1903)
Description:
Result of nationalism/liberalism and pogroms/antisemitism.
Relation between the first Jewish settlers and neighbouring Arab peasants (Fellahin) appeared to be reasonably satisfactory.
Most Zionist colonies employed around 5-10 times more Arabs than Jews
Relation between Zionists and Arab officials/city dwellers were more complex.
Some Palestinian notables opposed Jewish immigration and land purchases
- Fear of economic competition and resentment of the special privileges given to foreign residents under the legal capitulations granted by the Ottoman capital
Many landowners were happy to sell their land to Zionists (often at inflated prices)
- Generally, local notables maintained good personal relations with Jews and appeared to willingly let Zionists settle in Palestine
