Haitian Revolution (21 août 1791 – 1 janv. 1804)

Description:

The Haitian Revolution was a movement on the French colony of Saint-Domingue, later Haiti, in which slaves overthrew the local government and established an independent state in its place. It has been the only successful slave-led revolution in history.

Saint-Domingue was, at the time, the producer of the majority of the world's sugar and was a slave-centered society. The white-led overlords were made up of the big whites, who owned plantations and were generally the wealthiest on the island, and the small whites, who were poorer and directly oversaw slave management. Gens de coleur, wealthier slaves who had been freed or those who were members of black aristocratic families were also a part of the population.

By the end of the revolution, Haiti was an independent state and slavery had been abolished. A couple of year later, Napoleon I unsuccessfully attempted to reinstate slavery in the former colony.
