A system which originated from Jackson's presidency, where he 'rewarded' his patrons by giving them government jobs.
"To the victory belongs the spoils"
Nullification Crisis
South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union due to high tariffs that hurt their economy (Tariff of Abomination 1828/1832). While Andrew Jackson threatened on sending troops, Henry Clay's compromise has Congress gradually reduce the tax.
