-Was born into a Catholic family, but his theory about brain function was dubbed antireligious and the church refused a Catholic burial
-Proposed the first important theory of localization of brain function
-"Granddaddy of cortical localization"
"craniometry" = quantifiable study of the head
-Studies of head injury patients suggested a connection between specific would and specific personal deficits
-First to identify fibers connecting the cerebral hemisphere and confirm that some fibers crossed from one side of the brain to the opposite side of the spinal cord (contralateral function)
