Immanuel Kant (1 janv. 1724 – 1 janv. 1804)

Description:

Bridges Continental and British Enlightenment movements. Read Locke and Hume, a skeptic of Locke. Critiqued pure reason as simplistic (we can't objectively know things but only subjectively). Kant argued for two kinds of knowledge, the natural and spiritual. The first we have access to; the latter we do not. Knowledge is constructed through four kinds of categories (quantity, quality, relation, modality) and is mere construct not reality itself. This opened the door for liberal theology and modern science.

Believes consciousness is an activity of two parts: thinking and reflection on self.
