Assyria (1 janv. 1900 av. J.-C. – 1 janv. 612 av. J.-C.)

Description:

The Assyrian kingdom was established in the northern part of Mesopotamia in 1900 BCE by Akkadian-speaking Semitic people. It came to power when the Akkadian empire fell. The name Assyria was derived from the name of the Assyrian god, Ashur or Assur.

The Assyrian leader Shamshi-Adad brought wealth to the kingdom. Shamshi-Adad‘s death in 1781 BCE led the empire’s decline. Assyria was eventually conquered by the Babylonians.

The Assyrians came back in 1360 BCE and conquered all of Mesopotamia. They had notable leaders such as Tiglath Pileser I, Sargon II, Sennacherib, and Esarhaddon. The Assyrians expanded the empire by uniting most of the Middle East from Egypt to the Persian Gulf.
