Description:
American Marines arrive on the volcanic island called Iwo Jima. 750 miles away from Tokyo. US commanders thought it could be captured in 4 days, but it took longer because of hidden tunnels and trenches that thejapanese built. The battle ended and 1/3 marines died. This was the costliest battle in Marine Corps. Many Japanese died in battle or committed suicide. Only 23,000 surrendered.
