(1220-1450) It was a medieval city in Zimbabwe. Experts believe that the city was once the capital of a huge kingdom, but which kingdom it was is not certain. The huge city spanned a total of 2.7 miles, and had the capability to hold 18,000 people. The city has been speculated to have served as a royal palace for the local monarch. The ruins at Great Zimbabwe are some of the oldest and largest structures in Southern Africa. Experts believe that the decline was caused by water and trade shortages.
