World War One was the first World War and was caused when a Serbian patriot shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand (the leader of Austria) and caused Austria to invade Serbia. World War 1 affected the whole world if they liked it or not and was a very sad event not just for America but the whole world because it was the first world war and was a very dark time.
