Hojo Tokimasa acts as regent to Japan's shogun, the first of 16 such regents. Hōjō Tokimasa, (born 1138, Izu Province, Japan—died Feb. 6, 1215, Izu), Japanese warrior who aided Minamoto Yoritomo in establishing the Kamakura shogunate, the military government by which Yoritomo ruled the country from his base at Kamakura in central Japan, while the emperor continued to rule only symbolically from his residence at Kyōto, to the southwest. After Yoritomo’s death, Tokimasa transferred the power of government from Yoritomo’s descendants to his own family.
