1192 - 1199Minamoto Yoritomo was born in 1147 and died February 9, 1199. He founded the bakufu (shogunate). The shogunate was a system that the feudal lords used to rule Japan for 700 years. Yoritomo defied the emperor and established shugo and jitō throughout Japan. This undermined the local administrative power of Japan’s central government. He acquired the title of shogun over the shugo and jitō in 1192
