Mansa Musa (1 janv. 1280 – 1 janv. 1337)
Description:
Mansa Musa was the ninth Mansa, or emperor, of the Mali Empire. During Musa's reign, the Mali Empire was reported to have been the largest producer of gold in the world, and at that time, Musa himself was considered to be the richest person in the world, and may very well be the richest individual in all of history.
Because Musa was from Mali, an Islamic West African state, he was a Muslim. From 1324 to 1325, he performed the hajj. On his way to Mecca, he spent so much money in gold giving gifts to the people that he single-handedly decreased the value of gold significantly for over a decade.
As Mansa, Musa expanded his empire from where the Ghana Empire previously was to just past Timbuktu, which he annexed and turned into an Islamic learning center. Mansa Musa was viewed as a benevolent leader. It is unknown when he died, but scholars estimate the most likely date to be sometime in 1337.
