Indian Placement Program (18 déc. 1954 – 29 sept. 1996)
Description:
The height of this program was in the 60s and 70s. Baptized indigenous children were fostered by white families and attended white schools during the school year in an effort to turn their skin white and help them assimilate. An estimated 50,000 children went through the program. In Oct 1960 General Conference, Spender W Kimball spoke of the "success" of the program in turning the participants' skin lighter.
