Description:

"Gilded" refers to gold leaf that covers over something of little worth. The gilded age saw the boom of immigration, the development of economics & politics, the concentration of urban areas, a boom in industry, and the rise of consumerism.
This era also saw the introduction of skyscrapers and mass transit.
Ideas of individualism: no matter how humble your origins, Americans could rise above their circumstances as far as their talents would take them. Artistic and literary movement of realism was developed during this time. Writers and artists attempted to capture the world "as they saw it." Public schools helped immigrant children assimilate through a process known as Americanization.
