Description:
Born the first of 11 children in 1920, Gary grew up in Iowa during the depression. He had to leave schoolto work, but after fighting in northern Italy during WWII, Gary moved to Michigan with his wife, Henrietta,
and their growing family. He enrolled at Calvin College to become a teacher.
After teaching for a short time, Gary became a local businessman, establishing Byker Realty in 1956. He
became interested in politics and served as our State Senator from 1968 to 1979.
