Description:
Ideological movement: reject the old, and replace it with the application of logic and reason. Centered in Europe.
*Questioned religion and monarchs (helped fight the huge power that was the church)
*Called for basic human rights and democracy (right for trial, women's rights and education, abolishment of slavery)
*Popular sovereignty
*Revolutions (American and French, especially)
*Modern schooling and medicine
*Freedom of serfdom and slavery
John Locke--> Social contract theory (rulers only have power through the consent of those they rule over, people give up some of their natural rights to the govt. in exchange for protection etc)
Also led to nationalism
