Third Cholera Pandemic (1 janv. 1852 – 1 janv. 1860)

Description:

Where: Russia

Disease: Cholera

Cause: Vibrio cholerae bacteria

Origin: Once again spread from the Ganges Delta of India.

Transmission: Consumption of fecal contaminated water due to poor sanitation.

Symptoms:
-Profuse diarrhea
-Vomiting of clear liquid

Death toll: Over 1,000,000

End: A British doctor named John Snow identified contaminated water as the means of transmission in 1854. He noted a cluster of cases around a water pump in London, and advised officials to remove the handle of the pump. The number of cases in the surrounding area immediately declined. This revelation helped bring the Russian epidemic under control.
