The US initially tried staying neutral, but failed for a few reasons. They were lending significantly more money to the allies, showing bias. Second, Germany relied on U-boats, essentially targeting ships with products and goods, which usually resulted in death. Germany sunk the HMS Lusitania, killing 123 Americans. It was carrying weapons for the British and the Germans apologized, so this did not immediately bring the US into the war. Third, the Zimmerman Telegram was a telegram from Germany sent to Mexico that tried to get them to enter the war against the United States. And finally after Wilson put the war into humanitarian and democratic terms, they finally entered the war.
The Treaty of Versailles did a few things. Germany had to pay a lot of money. Germany gave up a lot of it's army. The League of Nations was established.
WIlson had a stroke and was unable to work for the rest of his term. The US Senate did not accept the treaty or join the League of nations.
The government expanded during the wartime
