The Second Opium War (28 juin 1856 – 18 oct. 1860)
Description:
The French and English wanted a war because they wanted more than the five treaty ports, up to fifteen
- They also wanted complete legalization of opium
- the treaty ports carved out a piece of land that would be filled with foreigners, not accountable to local law and would allow flood of foreign goods
-Now they came from their base in Hong Kong, versus India in the first war
- they attacked the same ports, then went further North and charged into Beijing through the yellow River
- The emperor ran
Treaty of Tientsin (Tianjin)
- Legalized Opium
- Opened 10 new treaty ports (including Shanghai Bund)
- Foreign Diplomatic Residence in Beijing
- Missionaries in Interior (one of the causes of the boxing rebellion
transformed Shanghai from small fishing village, into what we see today
-Also lost land to Russia in the north east and west (due to weakened state)
