Harold's Hunting Lodge (1 août 1065 – 24 août 1065)

Description:

Harold commissioned some building at Portskewett, a few miles south of Chepstow. His intention was apparently to invite Edward the Confessor there for a spot of hunting, perhaps to make amends after the disaster of his embassy to Normandy. To this end, he 'got together there many goods.'
On 24th August, when all the necessaries had been assembled ansd the building work was approaching completion, his new hunting lodge was attacked by the Welsh, still smarting from the earl's invasion two years before. Almost everyone working on the site was killed, and all the stockpiled provisions were stolen.
Clearly this was planned in advance, but it is not clear if this was linked to the plot against Tostog, whether it was a Welsh incursion, whether it was someone else. Wulfric, Leofric and Wynflead perhaps could oversee the building works as a sort of summer 'holiday' together after his absence in Normandy? Has to fend off attackers?
