The Vietnam war was fought between North Vietnam which desired to unite the entire country under a single communist regime while South Vietnam wanted to preserve a country that was more like the west. U.S. military advisors were planted in Vietnam slowly over the 1950s and in 1965, active combat units were deployed. It is JFK’s idea to deploy troops into Vietnam, but he died before he could do it. Johnson was the one that ended up deploying troops despite it being a losing battle as per JFK’s plans. By 1969, there was over 500,000 U.S. military personnel stationed in Vietnam. The Soviet Union and China provided supplies and guidance to North Vietnam. Cost and the amount of casualties were very high for the United States so they withdrew in 1973.
