Voter Participation: Australian/secret ballot; direct primaries; direct election of U.S. senators; initaitive, referendum, and recall; social welfare - (1 janv. 1913 – 1 janv. 1915)

Description:

One of the main ideologies of progressives were that they wanted the common people to have a bigger say in politics. The practice of secret ballots, which was practiced in Australia, began during this time so that individuals had to vote in a private booth in order to avoid being watched and manipulated into voting for a particular candidate. Another reform, direct primaries, was that politicians were now voted into government by the people in order to avoid political bosses from placing them in high positions and by 1915 this was somewhat used in every state in the US. Senators were also elected by the people rather than by state legislatures and in 1913 the 17th amendment was created which states that the senators had to be elected by the vote of the people. Progressives came up with ways to enforce politicians that did not want to reform through amendments that gave voters a way to convince the legislature to create a new bill, known as the initiative. It also gave them the opportunity to though on certain laws that were proposed, known as the referendum. And Lastly the recall gave individuals the ability to vote out a politician if they reached the majority vote.
