Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) (1 janv. 1972 – 1 janv. 1982)

Description:

NOW along with other women's organizations succeeded in getting 35 states to out of a required 38 to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, which provided for the legal equality of the sexes and prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex. Specifically it states that "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex." However, other women formed their own groups in opposition to the ratification of the ERA and ultimately it failed to be by the necessary 38 states by the expiration date in 1982. This demonstrated that despite all the gains and success of feminism and the women's movement, traditional notions of felinity still appealed to many women and to male dominated legislatures.
