Women and Homestead Farming In The Great Plains (1 janv. 1870 – 1 janv. 1900)

Description:

The Homestead Act that distributed 160 acre lots to western settlers, also enables women to get homestead farms. Single women, like the men who migrated to the plains, were drawn by economic opportunity. Other were widows attempting to take care of their children.

Women also directed their attention to moral reform and extending democracy on the frontier. Even though they did not have the vote, in 1880, women campaigned for a constitutional amendment that banned the sale of liquor. The temperance women eventually also focused on women's suffrage. In 1884 in Kansas women established the statewide equal Suffrage Association which delivers the state legislature with 7,000 signatures in support of women's suffrage. Even though they didn't get women the right to vote, women did win the right to vote and run in municipal elections. This was a precursor to women eventually broadening their organizational strength and achieving suffrage for all American women.
