Resistance and Rebellion (12 juill. 1820 – 1 janv. 1840)
Description:
Open rebellion was almost impossible for a slave to commit. However, slaves did practice subtle forms of resistance to their slaveholder's authority by breaking tools, or faking an illness, or burning dinner. In 1831a slave named Nat Turner did organize a revolt in Virginia in which 57 white people were killed for which 56 African Americans were executed (including Nat Turner). This revolt led southern states to impose harsher controls on slaves such as prohibiting slaves from reading or writing, new limits on black churches, defined rape as a crime only against white women, and outlawed assemblies of more than three black people without a white person's consent. These measures significantly worsened the living conditions of African Americans in the south.
