Separate spheres (1 janv. 1830 – 1 janv. 1850)
Description:
This was the common belief at the time that men and women had separate roles and should occupy separate places in society. Therefore, men should occupy the social, public sphere and women belonged to the domestic private sphere. However, in reality this idea had little relevance to the millions of women who worked on farms and factories. Also, for middle class families, women played a growing role in the market economy as they were responsible for most of the family's consumption of goods.
