Description:
The rise of the middle class resulted in man advice books, and ladies magazines portraying an new ideal of womanhood, known as the cult of domesticity which called for women to be confined to the domestic sphere and devout themselves to the care of children, the home and their husbands. However, in reality women worked much harder than this ideal because they helped cement social and economic bonds for their husbands, waved in charitable and temperance societies.
