Palmer Raids (1 janv. 1919 – 1 janv. 1920)

Description:

Unions launched a series of strikes in 1919 that occasionally resulted in violence. These strikes reinforced the Rad Scare panic that the U.S. was being overtaken by radicals. The fear was exaggerated by business leaders and the government in order to exaggerate the communist threat. In 1919, 8 bombs planted by radicals exploded in 8 cities including at the doorstep of the U.S. Attorney General Palmer. In response, Palmer launched a series of raids mostly against recent immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. He arrested 6,000 people and deported 556 immigrants. This racist abuse of justice did not uncover any radical communist plots and did not even uncover who the bombers were.
