Progressive Movement Partially Motivated By Backlash To Immigration Surge (1 janv. 1890 – 1 janv. 1919)
Description:
Campaigns for women's suffrage started in this time period and worked towards the passage of the 19th Amendment. However, the push for women's suffrage was partially motivated by racism against immigrants. Many white Americans increasingly viewed Catholics and Jews from eastern Europe as racially inferior and blamed them for crime in cities and argued that granting the right to vote to white protestant women would help solve the social problems created by immigrants.
