Ealdred sent to get Edward the Exile, (28 févr. 1054 – 1 janv. 1055)

Description:

Ealdred sent by Edward (and possibly the Godwins) to fetch back Edward the Exile from Hungary, to be heir apparent. This seems to be a compromise candidate that both could agree on. Ealdred was a Godwin supporter, so it is unlikely that he would have gone had it not been with the approval of the Godwins. Ealdred went to Cologne, where he was hosted by bishop Herman and emperor Henry III, and stayed for nearly a year. He seems to have been unsuccessful, for three possible reasons:
1, The distances involved in getting a message to Hungary are huge.
2, There had been rebellions in Hungary, so it may have been too politically complicated to get a message through.
3, Edward left England as an infant and did not speak English or have any particular attachment to England. He had a Hungarian wife (Agatha) and children (including the young Edgar). Perhaps he was not interested, or was at least cautious.
