Description:
In 1955, the anti-communist leader Ngo Dinh Diem became President of South Vietnam.
He began cracking down on the Communist sympathizers in the South, leading to a war between the two sides.
Significance: The war ended in a victory for the Soviets and North Vietnam, converting the country to Communism. America lost an important front of the Cold War.
