Nativism (1 janv. 1840 – 1 janv. 1850)
Description:
The increased immigration of the 1830s resulted in increased competition forgoes between immigrants and native born Americans. This resulted in an increase in racism towards immigrants and the growth of the Nativist movement. Nativists opposed immigration and started campaigns blaming immigrants for poverty and crime. The significance of this movement is that it resulted in violence against immigrants and the scapegoating of immigrants for social ills such as alcoholism, and therefore was one of the motivations for the Temperance Movement.
