Advances In Transportation (1 janv. 1820 – 1 janv. 1860)
Description:
The Westward expansion created the need for expanded roads and canals for the increased commercial trade. The federal government started major internal improvements such as the Erie Canal construction which required a large work force. This increased demand for workers attracted European immigrants; mostly Irish, Welsh and German that settled along the canal's route. This transportation construction expanded the economy which resulted in more immigration from Europe due to poverty. By the 1840s, 1,700,000 immigrants came to the U.S. The significance of this immigration surge is that it provided a cheap labor force for the growing U.S. economy which further increased commerce.
