Vietnamese Communist forces, supported by China, defeated the French at the Dien Bien Phu Valley. By quickly overrunning French strong points and denied use of airplanes,
Significance: The defeat ended French colonial efforts in Indochina. In the context of the Cold War, the Communists had another gained another foothold. However, the Geneva Accords allowed the US and the French a second chance.
