Berlin Blockade/Berlin Airlift (24 juin 1948 – 12 mai 1949)

Description:

The Berlin Blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of the US, Britain, and France to travel to their sectors of Berlin. Soviets blocked all access to canals, railroads, and roads to western Berlin, leaving 2.5 million German citizens without access to food, medicine, fuel, etc

The Western Allies responded with the Berlin Airlift. They supplied the Western Sectors from the air, providing 224 million dollars worth of supplies.

Significance: This was the first major conflict of the Cold War. As the military was involved, tensions were running extremely high, and could resulted in a war at this point.
