Description: This event was a proxy war between Soviet-occupied North Korea and US-occupied South Korea, initiated when the North had invaded the South in an attempt to bring the entire peninsula under their control. The UN supplied troops to fight alongside the south, pushing the North Koreans upwards. After many civilian and military deaths, the war resulted in a stalemate and a Korea divided by a demilitarized zone.Significance: The Korean war was the first proxy war in which the two rivals of the cold war battled in a third country and it saved South Korea from communist domination.
