Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1 janv. 1714 – 1 janv. 1788)

Description:

Nationality: German

One of the most influential composers of his generation, CPE Bach was trained by his father, served at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin from 1740-1768. He then became music director of the five principal churches in Hamburg.

Empfindsam Style
Bach was one of the leading proponents of the empfindsam (emotional) style, particularly in his slow movements. This style can convey refined passion, melancholy, or excitement through various musical characteristics. Ornamentation serves as a means of expression, not mere decoration, and other subtle harmonic features (such as nonharmonic tones and sequential repetition) also work towards these emotions. The style uses unexpected and sudden changes as a powerful means of expressing emotion. Using this, he demonstrated possibility of expressive keyboard music outside the Baroque tradition of the suite.

Keyboard Music
Most of Bach's keyboard music was written for amateurs to play for personal enjoyment. He helped to cultivate the sonata through his three movement pattern (fast first and last movements, and slow middle in a related key).
