Fenian Raids (1 oct. 1866 – 31 déc. 1871)

Description:

The years 1866 and 1871, the Fenian raids of the Fenian Brotherhood, which was an Irish Republican system. It was based on the U. S., on British army forts, form posts and other targets in Canada that were fought to cause pressure on Britain to eliminate it from Ireland. They eventually separated Catholic Irish-Canadians, which many of them were torn between loyalty to their new home and sympathy for the aims of the Fenians. The Protestant Irish were usually very loyal to Britain. They also fought with the Orange Order against the Fenians. Meanwhile, the U.S. officials captured the men and seized their arms. There is a consideration that few men in the U.S. government had become a blind eye to the arrangements for the invasion, angered at actions that could have been construed as Canadian support to the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. There were five Fenian raids of note and all of them ended in defeat and great failure.
