Description:
Iwo Jima was the island that would allow the US to escort bomber planes into Japan, and recognizing this, the US launched a series of attacks while Japan attempted to build up its defenses, the fierce fighting eventually ending in a US win, killing all but 1,000 of the Japanese defenders.
