1. rights of neutral nations and neutrality
2. neutrality was not respected and powers would ignore it alarmed the British

French:

1. Germans had attacked them
2. crush Germany's military as revenge and insurance against a second conflict
3. carve up Ottoman empire between them and Britain
4. allow parts of Austro-Hungarian Empire to set up independent states
