Crawford Toy (1836-1919) (1 janv. 1836 – 1 janv. 1919)

Description:

In his years as a student, Toy was seen as a bright star of the Christian faith, an educational elite. After fighting in the Civil War, he pursued further studies in Germany and, after returning, became a professor at SBTS in 1869. Within ten years, liberal German theology got the best of him, and he developed a progressive theology denying the inerrancy of Scripture. In 1880, Toy’s resignation from Southern was accepted, and he left for a teaching position at Harvard. At the end of his life, his theological spiral led to outright rejection of Christian orthodoxy; Albert Mohler regularly points incoming SBTS faculty to him as a model warning against apostasy. Toy’s impact on the SBC is negative, since his legacy is one of loss and deep sorrow for Baptists.
