Richard II & the Peasant revolt (6 janv. 1367 – 14 févr. 1400)

Description:

Crowned 1377

Peasant Revolt of 1381
The first great popular rebellion in English history. Its immediate cause was the peasants facing ridiculous taxes and fees which made living more than unbearable , the lack of reforms promised by the king , and the use of god and religion to justify the choices of the church and government. The rebellion had frightened the rich, and made them realise that they could not push the poor too far – there was no poll tax till 1990.
The Whig historians portrayed the revolt as the start of the English people's fight for freedom – as the beginning of the end of the feudal system.
